Maritime Safety Victoria (MSV) proposed changing the rules that apply to boaters, rowers and paddlers on the Yarra River upstream from Bolte Bridge to Dight’s Falls.

Code of Practice – boating activity events

Maritime Safety Victoria (MSV) invited feedback on a draft Code of Practice (the Code) developed to help managers of boating activity events (any event that directly or indirectly involves a vessel, for example a kayak race or open water swimming race with support vessels) comply with a safety duty introduced in 2018.

Rules for jet ski riders on the bay

Maritime Safety Victoria (MSV) invited feedback on a proposed rule change for the use of personal watercraft (PWC), such as jet skis, on Port Phillip Bay.

Exemption for low-powered paddle craft

Closed: 13 April 2017

This consultation paper was prepared to seek feedback on a proposed trial exemption from vessel registration and marine licensing requirements for owners and masters of low-powered electric paddle craft.

The motorised kayak exemption trial began in 2018 and was extended to 30 June 2020.

Local knowledge waters in Victoria

In 2014, Maritime Safety Victoria, committed to a comprehensive and state wide review of the local knowledge framework applicable to Victorian waters. The decision to review local knowledge was made recognizing that many aspects of the framework were outdated and some parts of the system had never been effectively exercised. This commitment was further strengthened as a result of recommendations made by the Coroner following a recent coronial inquest.

MMS for bus operators

Following a vehicle safety inspection trial, we sought feedback on proposed changes to section 2.4.2 of the maintenance management system for accredited bus operators.

Marine Enforcement Policy

We invited maritime stakeholders to comment on MSV's draft Marine Enforcement Policy. The policy was developed to support and promote ongoing compliance and enforcement of marine safety law throughout Victoria, in accordance with Part 8.3 of the Marine Safety Act 2010 (Vic).
