NSW launches Bus Safety Week 2016
25 October 2016
Bus Safety Week, 6-12 November, is part of NSW's 'Be Bus Aware' campaign which aims to reinforce the road rules relating to buses to the community and promote safer on-road interactions between pedestrians, motorists, bicycle riders and buses.
NSW has the largest metropolitan bus fleet in Australia. Between 2003 to 2013 across Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong areas alone, there were more than 4000 recorded crashes involving a heavy bus, 58 people were killed and a further 2727 people were injured.
Crashes involving buses often result in more severe outcomes to other road users due to their size and mass, and because of their size and weight, they take more time to stop.
Campaign website bebusaware.com.au includes a suite of animations highlighting tips in relation to safe boarding, travel and disembarkation from buses as well as a bus safety education video for students in years 5 and 6.
