Hop on to Boating Vic over Easter

This Easter, Maritime Safety Victoria (MSV) is encouraging boaters and paddlers to discover a new boat ramp – and the conditions at that location.

Gareth Johnson, Acting Director Maritime Safety, said: “With many Victorians holidaying within their home state, there’s never been a better time to check out a different boat ramp.

“The easiest way to discover a new ramp – and the conditions at that location – is to find it on the Boating Vic app or website.”

Boating Vic provides users with details for over 400 Victorian boat ramps and launching facilities. It also includes real-time weather forecasts and warnings making it an essential preparation tool for a stress-free trip on the water.

While MSV is hoping to see many Victorians enjoying themselves outdoors, Mr Johnson encouraged anyone planning a trip on the water to prepare their vessel and safety equipment before travelling.

“Since 1 July 2020, we have seen over 150 serious incidents, as well as 13 serious injury incidents where people were hospitalised. Sadly 10 people have also lost their lives.

“We’re encouraging boaters and paddlers to make sure their vessels are fit for purpose, ensure inflatable lifejackets have been serviced, are in working order, and are worn securely all times while out on the water.”

Mr Johnson said that besides finding a new ramp, Boating Vic is the perfect trip preparation tool.

We’ve got ramp cameras at popular long-weekend getaway locations across Victoria which help waterway users determine how popular a particular launching facility is before making the trip.”

The app also provides boaters with comprehensive safety advice to ensure a safe and successful day on the water.

“The app’s Knowledge Hub is full of helpful boating tips from our Recreational Boating Safety team, as well as our partners Better Boating Victoria, the Victorian Fisheries Authority, Parks Victoria, Victoria Police, Victorian Ports Melbourne and Emergency Management Victoria.

“It’s a great resource for boaters of all experience levels, with tutorials including how to self-service inflatable lifejacket, how to register an EPIRB, and how to conduct critical boat maintenance checklists all in there.

“We want to make sure that everyone who heads out on the water this Easter has a great, safe trip.”
