Identifying boaters most at risk
27 December 2017
Earlier this year, Transport Safety Victoria (TSV) engaged Monash University’s Accident Research Centre to undertake an analysis of boating and transport-related injuries.
The Victorian Injury Surveillance Unit looked at the nature, incidence and mechanism of certain injuries to patients presenting to Victorian hospitals.
Key insights from the Maritime report include the following:
- Almost three-quarters of Maritime transport related injury admissions were male. This is consistent with licensing data which tells us that the majority of licence holders are male.
- Maritime injury rates increased by an average of 5.3% per year over the study period.
TSV wants to help recreational vessel operators to understand how to enjoy their activity and come home safely at the end of the day.
This data will help us identify those boaters most at risk, and work with them to raise their awareness on how to stay safe and compliant on the water.
