Shipping containers posing a hazard to safe navigation

Boaters travelling from Victoria into NSW waters are advised that shipping containers lost from the vessel APL England continue to pose a serious hazard to safe navigation.

On Sunday 24 May 2020, APL England lost approximately 50 shipping containers overboard 36 nautical miles east of Port Botany, at position 34* 11”.56S and 151* 55”.130E.

While some containers have been recovered, many have not and their exact location is unknown. So far containers have been sighted offshore as far north as Norah Head and as far south as Tathra.

Marine Rescue NSW are broadcasting a sécurité for the below marine districts, commencing on marine VHF Channel 16 with the broadcast channel to be advised.

  • Eden and Batemans Bay – broadcast from Marine Rescue Bermagui every 60 minutes at 45 minutes past the hour
  • Illawarra – broadcast from Marine Rescue Port Kembla every 60 minutes at 15 minutes past the hour
  • Sydney – broadcast from Marine Rescue Sydney every 60 minutes at 30 minutes past the hour
  • Hunter – broadcast from Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie at 45 minutes past the hour.
