How long have you been with Rail Safety Victoria?

I started work as a Rail Safety Officer with RSV in September.

Brief work background?

I’ve worked in different industries, mainly in project and quality management. Some of these roles involved:

  • Coordinating ship repairs
  • Design, installation and commissioning of automated equipment for manufacturing, training and farming
  • Installation of and commissioning of mobile telecommunications infrastructure
  • Setting up a computer numerical control machine tool factory
  • Managing a hydraulic hose manufacturing plant
  • Confirming integrity of oil refinery equipment during shutdowns
  • Managing quality and safety of rail construction, renewals and maintenance.

I’ve also been involved in developing new technologies for previous employers that have been patented, as follows:

  • A computerised integrated farming system
  • A varying diameter roller used for rapid directional change in material handling systems.

Explain a typical work day.

It will be either:

  • In the office preparing for the various activities of a Rail Safety Officer like site visits, compliance inspections and audits on the rail transport operators or writing reports once the activities are completed,
  • Out in the field carrying out regulatory activities on the operators, or
  • Communicating with the operators to discuss regulatory outcomes of the activities

Describe something about the rail regulator that operators may not be aware of.

The value a rail regulator brings to the safety equation by providing independent and constructive input to rail transport operators based on an analysis of national risk data.

What do you see as some future challenges for rail operators?

Maintaining a safe, comfortable and reliable rail network for rail commuters. A safe working environment for rail safety workers is also important - particularly now with all the upgrade works happening to improve rail services now and into the future.

What characteristic do you most admire in others?

Being themselves.

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” – Oscar Wilde

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Things to do, places to go, people to meet.

Given a chance, who would you like to be for a day? Why?

Yoda. It would be great to have his wisdom and ability to channel my inner force for good.

What would a "perfect" day look like for you?

Having a lazy day with my family.

If you had one free hour each day, how would you use it?

Reading technology magazines.

How long have you been with Rail Safety Victoria?

Since September.

Brief work background?

As a safety professional I have been involved in a variety of industries from engineering, rail and construction to pharmaceutical and social welfare. I am excited about the continuing developments in the rail industry, the co-regulatory approach and my role within this area.

Explain a typical work day.

After the usual morning rush around I walk to work which takes about 15 minutes and gives me a chance to clear my head and plan my day. During the day there are a number of activities with accreditation and Notifications of Change. I get to work with a great team that has depth and diversity in culture, personality and skill set. At the end of the day I walk home and look forward to spending some time with my family.

What do you see as some future challenges for rail operators?

The increasing population growth presenting substantial growth both in freight and passenger transport.

What characteristic do you most admire in others?

Empathy and compassion.

In our busy lives it is easy to forget that not everyone in our community is doing so well. I really admire those everyday people who take the time out of their normal hectic day to help and assist others. Not because it’s their job, not because they must but because they care.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Hungry cat!

Given a chance, who would you like to be for a day? Why?

Adam Sandler - He is a very polarising person. He has produced some brilliant work, some work below average (three of his movies are considered by critics as the worst ever made). He tries his hand at many different things regardless of criticism. Failure doesn’t prevent him from trying.

What would a "perfect" day look like for you?

Travelling somewhere I’ve never been before seeing something I’ve never seen before and sharing the experience with my family.
